The death of Spanish footballer Jesús de Miguel following a collision during a league match on November 2, 2026, has revived painful memories of players whose careers and lives were affected by medical emergencies on the pitch.

From Nigeria’s Samuel Okwaraji to Denmark’s Christian Eriksen, football has witnessed tragedies and remarkable recoveries that continue to shape discussions about player safety.

De Miguel, 30, died on November 3 after suffering cardiac arrest following a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono while representing CD Tenerife. The incident has renewed attention on the importance of immediate medical intervention, particularly in situations involving unconsciousness, cardiac arrest and serious physical trauma.

Samuel Okwaraji—Nigeria, 1989
Nigeria suffered one of its darkest footballing moments on August 12, 1989, when Super Eagles midfielder Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji collapsed during a World Cup qualifying match against Angola at the National Stadium in Lagos. The 25-year-old, who was also a qualified lawyer, died despite efforts to save him, with congestive heart failure identified as the cause.

Okwaraji’s death remains deeply embedded in Nigerian football history, more than three decades after the tragedy. His commitment to representing Nigeria and his achievements outside football have continued to inspire tributes from supporters and former teammates.

Christian Eriksen—Denmark, 2021 and 2026
Denmark’s international Christian Eriksen collapsed during his country’s European Championship match against Finland on June 12, 2021, after suffering cardiac arrest. Emergency treatment, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, saved his life, and he later returned to professional football after receiving an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.

Eriksen experienced another frightening episode on June 7, 2026, during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine, when his implanted device delivered a shock after detecting a dangerous heart rhythm. He subsequently reassured supporters that he was recovering and explained that the second incident differed medically from his cardiac arrest in 2021.

Marc-Vivien Foé—Cameroon, 2003
Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foé collapsed during his country’s FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia on June 26, 2003, in Lyon, France. The 28-year-old could not be revived, and a subsequent examination identified hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition associated with abnormal thickening of the heart muscle.

Foé’s death prompted widespread mourning across African and European football, particularly among supporters of Cameroon and Manchester City, where he had played. His former clubs and teammates continued to honour his memory, while the tragedy intensified scrutiny of cardiac screening in professional sport

Cristiano Júnior—Brazil, 2004
Brazilian striker Cristiano Sebastião de Lima Júnior died on December 5, 2004, after collapsing during the Federation Cup final in India while playing for Dempo SC against Mohun Bagan. The 25-year-old had been involved in a collision with goalkeeper Subrata Paul during a scoring move before suffering a fatal medical emergency.

His death generated controversy over the availability and adequacy of emergency medical services at the stadium. The tragedy became an important reference point in Indian football’s discussions about ambulance readiness, medical equipment and prompt treatment.

Antonio Puerta—Spain, 2007
Sevilla defender Antonio Puerta collapsed during a Spanish league match against Getafe on August 25, 2007, but initially regained consciousness and was able to leave the field. He subsequently suffered further cardiac arrests and died in hospital three days later at the age of 22

Medical examinations linked his death to arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, a serious heart condition associated with dangerous rhythm disturbances. Sevilla retired his number 16 shirt in his honour, while supporters continued to commemorate his contribution to the club.

Phil O’Donnell—Scotland, 2007
Motherwell captain Phil O’Donnell collapsed during a Scottish Premier League match against Dundee United on December 29, 2007, while preparing to be substituted. The 35-year-old was treated by medical personnel and taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination identified left ventricular heart failure, leaving Scottish football mourning another player lost during competition. Motherwell later named a stand at Fir Park in his honour, preserving his legacy at the club.

Fabrice Muamba—England, 2012
Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba suffered cardiac arrest during an FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur on March 17, 2012. Medical personnel carried out prolonged resuscitation efforts, including CPR and defibrillation, before his heartbeat was restored.

Muamba survived and made a remarkable recovery, although medical advice eventually brought his professional playing career to an end. His experience became one of football’s most prominent examples of the importance of rapid emergency response and access to trained medical personnel.

Jesús de Miguel — Spain, 2026
CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel collapsed after colliding with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during stoppage time in their Spanish second-division fixture on November 2, 2026. The 30-year-old received emergency treatment and was transferred to hospital after suffering cardiac arrest but died the following morning.

His death prompted tributes across Spanish football and an investigation into the circumstances of the collision. The incident has also highlighted the distinction between sudden cardiac events arising from underlying medical conditions and emergencies that follow traumatic contact during play.

Football’s Continuing Responsibility to Player Safety
These eight cases span nearly four decades and involve different medical circumstances, including underlying heart conditions, sudden cardiac arrest and traumatic injury. Some players survived because emergency intervention was available, while others died despite treatment.

For Nigeria, Okwaraji’s death remains a lasting reminder of the human cost of sporting emergencies. His legacy, alongside those of Foé, Puerta, Muamba and other affected footballers, reinforces the importance of properly equipped medical teams, accessible defibrillators, regular medical assessment and clear emergency response procedures at every level of the game.
